As a former Michigan Department of Human Services Child Protective Services caseworker, Sonia was trained to investigate allegations of child abuse and sexual abuse. As such, she brings a new array of expertise to the table when our clients are faced with serious allegations of child abuse and sexual abuse.
Sonia also worked as a State of Michigan Probation and Parole Officer. During her career with the State of Michigan, Sonia specialized in working with sex offenders. She wrote thousands of Pre-Sentence Investigation Reports and learned extensively about risk assessments, criminal sexual conduct cases, and how the Michigan Department of Corrections handles prisoners convicted of sex offenses.
Sonia’s career as a lawyer began as an Assistant Attorney General where she was assigned to prosecute child abuse and neglect cases, termination of parental rights petitions, and investigations involving Shaken Baby Syndrome, also known as SBS, abusive head trauma, broken bones, and unexplained fractures. Sonia has also represented many children in Child Protective Services cases and has been a zealous advocate for juveniles involved in the system. This is true whether her juvenile clients have been accused of crimes including sexting or criminal sexual conduct, or were alleged victims in abuse and neglect cases.
Sonia’s unparalleled background make her extremely well-known to the social work and law enforcement agencies throughout Oakland, Macomb and Wayne Counties. After more than eleven years of civil service in the Metro Detroit area, Sonia chose to open her law firm in the private sector, Cannon Law, PLC, which is based in Birmingham. With her vast experience regarding investigations, child abuse, and CPS, Sonia has been defending parents accused of child abuse and sexual abuse for the past several years. Additionally, these cases often involve issues that arise in divorce court, custody battles, and family court, where Sonia also has the knowledge and background to serve her clients.
